Armin van Buuren is a Dutch DJ, producer and musician. He was born in Leiden in 1976 and grew up in Koudekerk aan den Rijn. He studied law at Leiden University and began working as a DJ at Club Nexus in 1996, and he returned to finish his law degree in 2003.
Since 2001 he has hosted the weekly radio show A State of Trance. His own channel describes it as reaching 44 million listeners in over 80 countries. It has grown into an event series and an album series as well. His site describes him as a born perfectionist who has kept his focus on the music despite the pressure that comes with being one of the world's most popular DJs. He is a five-time number one in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll. He has also received a Grammy nomination, and he co-founded Armada Music, which his channel calls the world's biggest independent dance music label.
He has headlined festivals and venues around the world, including Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland and Electric Daisy Carnival. His collaborators have ranged from Hardwell, David Guetta and Martin Garrix to Moby and Jon Bon Jovi. In June 2025 he released his ninth studio album, Breathe. He has also made Piano, which he calls his most personal album to date: 15 self-composed piano pieces, each recorded in one take in Dolby Atmos.
He has spoken of trance as more than a genre, calling it a way of looking at music and life. He has also given production masterclasses to young producers.
