Colleen Saidman Yee is a yoga teacher who has taught since 1998 and practiced since 1984. She founded Yoga Shanti in Sag Harbor, New York, which opened in 1999. The studio's own pages call her a world-renowned teacher, and The New York Times gave her the title "The First Lady of Yoga," according to her Insight Timer teacher page.
With her husband Rodney Yee and longtime teachers, she developed the Yoga Shanti method. It honors the traditions of yoga while responding to the needs of modern, western bodies and minds. It is rooted in the Iyengar and Ashtanga traditions, and it aims to be welcoming and safe for everyone, from beginners to senior teachers and from the most agile to the most fragile. In her classes, students are never asked to contort or push past healthy limits. They are invited to practice a pose "any amount."
Colleen co-created the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program with Donna Karan and Rodney Yee. The program brings yoga-based therapeutic techniques into hospital and hospice care. Her Insight Timer page also notes four Yoga Journal covers, the online course Yoga for Inner Peace, and her 2015 book Yoga for Life, a mix of memoir and practical instruction that addresses addiction, body image and recovery. In 2020 she launched a podcast of the same name.
She leads teacher trainings and retreats, often alongside Rodney Yee, and holds an annual women's retreat of her own.
Worth Knowing
Colleen Saidman Yee is an internationally respected yoga teacher who has been practicing since 1984 and teaching since 1998—nearly four decades of continuous engagement with the discipline. The New York Times crowned her "The First Lady of Yoga," a title that reflects not just celebrity recognition but genuine authority within the yoga community, particularly among other teachers who regard her as a teacher's teacher. What sets her apart is her consistent presence across multiple platforms and her willingness to build institutional structures: she opened Yoga Shanti Sag Harbor in 1999 and Yoga Shanti Tribeca in 2018, establishing spaces that embody her teaching philosophy. Beyond studio instruction, she has graced the cover of Yoga Journal four times and collaborated with designer Donna Karan and yoga pioneer Rodney Yee on the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy Program, now deployed in healthcare facilities across the country. Her influence extends through thousands of yoga videos, her book Yoga for Life (2015), and her podcast launched in 2020—making her one of the most visible and accessible voices for serious yoga instruction in contemporary wellness culture.
