Marla Leigh (Goldstein) is a frame drummer, percussionist, flautist, composer and educator, and one of the few female professional frame drummers in the world today. She began playing music at the age of three and has kept playing ever since. She holds a BFA and MFA in Percussion from California Institute of the Arts, where she studied with Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Randy Gloss and Layne Redmond.
Marla is drawn to rhythm from cultures around the world and to the way it brings people together. She is the founder and CEO of Frame Drum Academy, a global online community of frame drum students, and she co-developed a signature line of frame drums with the Cooperman Company. She also leads drumming and wellness retreats at places such as Esalen Institute, Harbin and Kalani. She offers workshops and residencies for yoga studios, universities and synagogues, and has presented clinics at festivals including Tambouri Mundi in Germany, the Zurich Arts Festival, NAFDA festivals and the Asheville Percussion Festival.
Her yoga and meditation offerings draw on Nada Yoga, chanting and ritual rhythm. They include live music for yoga classes with Hebrew and Vedic chanting, flutes and world percussion. She has played live for yoga teachers including Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, Hala Khouri and Janet Stone. Her compositions have appeared on Hala Khouri's yoga DVD, in Janet Stone's iPhone yoga application, and in the films Bold Native and The Cellist.
Her debut album and music video, Rhythms of Tof Miriam, was released in May 2020. It was recorded in Israel and honors the ancient lineage of women frame drummers. Marla believes in the power of music to help transform consciousness.
Worth Knowing
Marla Leigh is one of the few female professional frame drummers actively working today, and she brought that skill—along with flute and composition—into a deliberate intersection between world percussion and spiritual practice. She's serious about frame drumming as an instrument and tradition: she studied under Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Layne Redmond, and Randy Gloss at CalArts, pursuing both a BFA and MFA in percussion. But she's equally serious about the ceremonial and meditative dimensions of rhythm—she leads retreats at Esalen, Harbin, and Kalani, provides live percussion and flute for yoga classes grounded in Nada Yoga and Vedic chanting, and has played alongside teachers like Shiva Rea and Hala Khouri. Her debut album, Rhythms of Tof Miriam (2020), honors an ancient lineage of women frame drummers and was recorded in Israel. People follow her work because she holds both traditions—the technical mastery of world percussion and the spiritual intentionality of rhythm as a gateway to consciousness—without reducing either to cliché.
