Rhonda V. Magee is a mindfulness teacher, author and Professor Emeritus at the University of San Francisco, where she was the founding Director of the Center for Contemplative Law and Ethics. She describes herself as a healing story-seeker-finder-teller and transformational guide, dedicated to increasing understanding and collaboration across differences through socially-engaged mindfulness.
Born in North Carolina in 1967, she grew up in Hampton, Virginia, and found solace and inspiration in her public school teachers, community life and student leadership. She earned undergraduate and M.A. degrees in Sociology at the University of Virginia, then a J.D., and entered the practice of law before her passion for teaching led her into the academy.
For more than twenty years she has studied mindfulness, its roots in Buddhism, and its applications in the world. She trained as a mindfulness teacher through the Oasis Teacher Training Institute of the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness, and has studied with teachers including Norman Fischer, Joan Halifax and Jon Kabat-Zinn. She is the author of The Inner Work of Racial Justice, and her writing draws on law and legal history, weaving storytelling, poetry, analysis and practice. Her current research and practice explore the meeting of mindfulness and the African-American aesthetic emerging from the Black Social Gospel tradition, which she calls Soulfulness.
Magee has served as a guide and advisor to organizations including the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society (former Chair of the Board), the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (former President of the Board), the Brown Center for Mindfulness and the Mindfulness in Law Society. She founded the Mount Iris Meditation Community, which explores new ways of belonging supported by what she calls Soulhearted Mindfulness. A sought-after keynote speaker, she has brought her work to universities, workplaces and communities, and has shared it in TEDx talks. In 2015 she was a co-recipient of the University of San Francisco's Ignatian Service Award.
Worth Knowing
Rhonda V. Magee is a mindfulness teacher, author, and law professor emeritus whose work centers on something most mindfulness instruction ignores: how contemplative practice relates directly to racial justice, systemic inequity, and healing across differences. Rather than treating meditation as personal wellness or stress reduction, Magee frames socially-engaged mindfulness as a tool for understanding and collaboration in contexts of deep social division—courtrooms, workplaces, universities, communities. Born in North Carolina in 1967 and raised in Hampton, Virginia, she brought a legal scholar's rigor and a storyteller's sensibility to mindfulness teaching after initially practicing law. What draws serious practitioners and institutions to her work is precisely this: she doesn't separate inner work from outer work, and she refuses the apolitical framing common to mainstream mindfulness culture. Her 2015 Ignatian Service Award from the University of San Francisco recognized this bridging work, as have her advisory roles at institutions like the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society and Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute.
