Ruth King is a meditation teacher, author and founder of the Mindful of Race Institute. Her work explores the inner life of race, rage, mindfulness and emotional wisdom, and rests on a conviction she states plainly: "Racism is a heart disease, and it's curable!"
She grew up in South Central Los Angeles, in an African American family and community, during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, among the Baptist and Pentecostal churches and the explosion of jazz and R&B. She describes those years as a source of lessons about people, belonging, race, resilience and how the world works. A lifelong curiosity about what shapes us has taken her around the world and, in time, inward. She is a great-grandmother and lives in Charlotte, NC, with her wife, Dr. Barbara Riley.
Ruth holds a master's degree in Clinical Psychology and spent many years as an organizational development consultant, supporting people and organizations through personal and cultural change. She has practiced Buddhism since the early 1990s and has taught the Dharma since 2006. Her roots are primarily in the Theravada tradition, with deep influences from Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings, somatic awareness and contemplative inquiry.
She is the author of Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism From the Inside Out, The Emotional Wisdom Cards, and Healing Rage: Women Making Inner Peace Possible. Through the Institute she asks how mindfulness can help us understand our racial conditioning and meet what we discover with honesty, wisdom and care. She teaches from inside that question, not outside it. Her Pathways grew from practices she has lived with, questioned, taught and refined over many years. Her invitation is simple: slow down, turn inward, listen deeply, and meet yourself and others with tenderness, clarity and truth.
Her teaching has reached corporations, universities, nonprofits, and meditation and mindfulness communities, including Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Insight Meditation Society and Sounds True programs.
Worth Knowing
Ruth King is a meditation teacher, dharma instructor, author, and founder of the Mindful of Race Institute—a community dedicated to examining how racial conditioning lives in the body and mind, and how contemplative practice can help us transform it. She grew up in South Central Los Angeles during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements, surrounded by Baptist and Pentecostal churches, jazz, and R&B—a cultural and spiritual inheritance she draws on when teaching that "racism is a heart disease, and it's curable." Her students and readers seek her out because she connects the inner work of meditation practice directly to the often-unspoken emotional and psychological dimensions of race, belonging, and resilience. With decades of Buddhist practice, years as both an organizational development consultant and clinical psychologist, she brings intellectual rigor, embodied wisdom, and a hard-earned belief that transformation is possible. Her teaching has reached corporations, universities, retreat centers like Spirit Rock and Insight Meditation Society, and thousands of practitioners who are hungry for teachers who refuse to separate spiritual practice from the material reality of how we live and who we've learned to be.
