Shyam Dattani's work as a classical Indian vocalist exists primarily in the live realm, carried through the baithak tradition rather than the recording studio. His practice centers on ghazal and thumrī—two intimately expressive forms of Hindustani music that depend on proximity, subtlety, and the unrepeatable chemistry between performer and listener. As the artistic director of the Poems of Love baithak series at Aangan Studio London, Dattani has chosen to prioritize the ephemeral gathering over the permanent artifact. His discography, as a result, remains undocumented in the conventional sense. For those seeking to understand his artistry, the invitation is not to a catalog of albums but to the living tradition itself: the salon, the mehfil, the room where voice and poetry meet breath and silence.

For devotional listening: Seek out recordings or live sessions from traditional baithak gatherings where thumrī is performed in its most contemplative register—slow, devotional pieces that unfold like prayer.
For contemplative moods: Ghazal performances rooted in classical Urdu poetry offer a reflective, interior listening experience. The form's layered meanings and melodic restraint reward close attention and solitude.
For energetic engagement: Look for mehfil recordings that include faster thumrīs or more rhythmically animated ghazals, where the interplay between vocalist and tabla becomes a conversation of increasing intensity.
For healing: The baithak format itself—intimate, acoustic, grounded in human presence—offers a restorative counterpoint to amplified, mediated sound. Any live salon session in this tradition can serve as a form of sonic care.
