Satish Kumar is an activist, author and speaker whose work centres on peace, ecology and spirituality.
In 1962 he undertook a peace pilgrimage of over 8,000 miles on foot to the capitals of the world's nuclear powers: Moscow, Paris, London and Washington, D.C. Motivated by a wish to promote nuclear disarmament and peace, he delivered packets of "peace tea" to the leaders of these nations, emphasising dialogue and understanding over conflict.
He is a significant figure in ecological education. He edited Resurgence & Ecologist magazine for over four decades and co-founded Schumacher College in Devon, England, which focuses on holistic education and sustainability. His work emphasises "reverential ecology", a deep respect for nature and the interconnectedness of all life, seeing humans as part of the natural community rather than valuing nature only for its use.
His approach to education draws on what he calls head, heart and hands: intellect alongside emotional intelligence, compassion and practical skills such as gardening and cooking. He favours learning through direct experience of nature, education oriented toward serving others and caring for the earth, and learning as a lifelong journey of self-discovery.
Kumar has written several books, including his autobiography No Destination. He continues to give lectures and workshops worldwide on ecological regeneration and spiritual fulfilment. His honours include honorary doctorates from various universities and a vice-presidency of the RSPCA.
