Where to Start with Emm Gryner: A Beginner's Guide

Start with the book. Emm Gryner's catalog is wide, but the book is where her music career, her coaching and her teaching come together. It is part guide to finding your voice and part memoir, so you get the person and the method in one sitting.

The Best Entry Point: The Healing Power of Singing (ECW Press, 2021)

Start with the book. Emm Gryner's catalog is wide, but the book is where her music career, her coaching and her teaching come together. It is part guide to finding your voice and part memoir, so you get the person and the method in one sitting. You learn why a Canadian singer-songwriter who toured with David Bowie, founded Dead Daisy Records and co-created the first music video in space now spends her time helping people sing and speak with less fear.

If you read only one thing, read this. Everything else makes more sense afterward.

The Next Three Places to Go

**1. Live At The 100 Club (2025).** This is a six-track live album, short enough to finish in one sitting. After the book, it lets you hear what she describes: a voice that is expressive and unguarded, with a rock-and-roll edge. Live recordings show her habits as a performer better than polished studio work does.

**2. KillerStar Reimagined (2024).** This seven-track album shows her as a songwriter and arranger who revisits her own material. Listen to it after the live record to hear how the same songs change when she rethinks them.

3. "Go (Hold On Tight) [Mark Plati Alternate Mix]" (2024) and "Falling Through (Mark Plati Alternative Acoustic Version)" (2024). These two singles are a quick way to compare production approaches. One is a full alternate mix and the other is stripped back and acoustic. If you want a look at her newest direction, "Rubicon" (2026) is the latest single.

What to Expect

Expect something warmer and less clinical than "vocal coaching" suggests. Her approach blends rock-and-roll grit with science-based coaching, and the book reads like a conversation with someone who has been on both sides of the microphone. There is memoir in it, so you will get stories about a working musician's life as well as exercises.

On the music side, expect craft over spectacle. She is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with a long career, and the work is melodic and carefully made. Her latest album, Business & Pleasure, explores yacht rock with Nashville musicians, so her range includes smooth, playful material alongside the more intense work.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"This is only for professional singers." The masterclasses are aimed at singers or former singers, but the book's premise, healing through singing, is for anyone who has gone quiet, tight or self-conscious about their voice.

"It's a technique manual." Her teaching emphasizes that the work is often less about learning more technique than about something deeper, such as releasing control and rediscovering expression. Readers who skip to the exercises miss the point.

"She's a Bowie footnote or a novelty." The Bowie collaboration, the Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar On Me" reimagining with the Royal Philharmonic and the "Space Oddity" video with Chris Hadfield are real credits. They are only part of a body of work that includes three Juno nominations and an independent label.

"Yacht rock means it isn't serious." The genre is a deliberate, craft-driven choice, not a joke.

When It Lands Hardest

This work hits hardest when your voice has gotten smaller than you want it to be. That might follow years away from singing, a stretch of performing that made you overly controlled, or a period of low confidence at work or in life. It also lands for people at a turning point who want to live with more purpose, because the coaching connects voice to confidence and direction. If you are a songwriter feeling stuck, the music and the book offer a useful model of a long, adaptive career.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Read the first chapters of The Healing Power of Singing. Notice which passages you resist.

Day 2: Keep reading. Try one exercise out loud, even if it feels awkward. Do it somewhere private.

Day 3: Listen to Live At The 100 Club start to finish, without multitasking.

Day 4: Finish the book's main sections. Write down two habits you recognize in your own voice, whether singing or speaking.

Day 5: Listen to KillerStar Reimagined. Pay attention to what changes in the arrangements.

Day 6: Compare the Mark Plati alternate mix of "Go (Hold On Tight)" with the acoustic "Falling Through," then play "Rubicon." Sing along to at least one.

Day 7: Reread your Day 4 notes. Decide whether to keep going, perhaps with one of her voice masterclasses if you're a singer or former singer, or to simply keep a daily voice practice of five minutes.
