Kristy Arbon is the founder of HeartWorks, creator of Somatic Self-Compassion® and developer of Live Online Mindful Self-Compassion for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. She is an Australian living in the US, in St Louis. After discovering the healing power of emergent self-wisdom and self-compassion in her own life, she felt called to share these practices and trainings with others, and she has made it her life's work. In her words: "I teach so that I can learn, and I learn so that I can teach."
Her teaching draws on mindfulness, self-compassion and attention to the body. Somatic Self-Compassion® is built on the understanding that healing stress means addressing body experience as well as the mind, and that people need to reconnect with their bodies safely and with compassion. She also writes about what she calls radical emergent self-wisdom: the idea that each person has an inner wisdom that trauma can cover over, and that the body can help us reach it.
Kristy's background is in mindfulness and retreat work. She has managed a retreat center, led retreats and been on retreats. In 2012 she started the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion with Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer, the co-developers of the Mindful Self-Compassion program. She has facilitated women's self-compassion retreats, where the guiding question is "What do I need?" followed by "How can I give that to myself?"
Her site offers articles and guided meditations on themes such as the inner critic, anxiety, anger, shame, forgiveness and lovingkindness.
Worth Knowing
Kristy Arbon is a meditation teacher, somatic practitioner, and retreat facilitator who founded HeartWorks and created Somatic Self-Compassion®, a hybrid approach bridging mindfulness meditation with body-based healing. Originally from Australia, she now teaches from St. Louis and serves as a developer for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, where she collaborates with Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer—the co-developers of the foundational Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) program. People follow her work because she addresses a genuine gap in secular mindfulness: most meditation teachers focus on the mind, but Kristy insists that unprocessed trauma and chronic stress literally live in the nervous system and body, inaccessible to breathing exercises or thought observation alone. Her teaching draws on direct retreat experience and what she calls "radical emergent self-wisdom"—the premise that each person carries inner guidance that trauma can obscure, and that compassionate attention to body sensation helps reveal it. Her philosophy, expressed simply: "I teach so that I can learn, and I learn so that I can teach."
