Silas Day is a meditation teacher, writer and dharma student who offers talks and courses on Buddhism, Eastern philosophy and general spiritual practice. His stated aim is to make the world a better place one person at a time.
He has been fascinated by the true nature of consciousness, and by how to explore it, since he was thirteen. He left college after two years of divinity studies to give more time to meditation, the study of philosophical systems and methods of liberation. He studied and practiced within the Mahayana and, more specifically, the Zen/Chan traditions of Buddhism for five years. He then widened his studies to include all major schools of Buddhism, Eastern philosophy and Western mysticism.
Silas takes a non-sectarian approach. He hopes to establish a unified field theory of meditation across the many schools, much as chemists came together to create the periodic table. His teaching is practical. It is meant to let people learn and explore the Dharma on their own terms, without pressure to subscribe to a particular school or spiritual path.
His courses range from the basics of Buddhism, including the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Five Precepts and Awakening, to an overview of the three main branches of Buddhism and more adept styles of insight meditation. He has also produced many guided meditations. He keeps a reading list for people of any skill level, from Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind to the Shobogenzo.
Worth Knowing
Silas Day is a meditation teacher and dharma student who approaches Buddhism and Eastern philosophy from a distinctly practical, non-sectarian angle — which is rare among teachers working in this space. Rather than asking students to adopt a specific lineage or tradition wholesale, he's focused on a bigger question: what do all meditation traditions have in common, and what can be extracted from that commonality? That ambition appeals to serious practitioners who have already dipped into multiple schools and are tired of sectarian gatekeeping. His stated aim is deliberate and modest — to make the world better one person at a time — but his methodology is intellectually rigorous. He's drawn to the foundational question of consciousness itself, a fascination since age thirteen, and has spent years studying across Mahayana Buddhism, Zen/Chan traditions, and Western mysticism to answer it. What keeps people coming back is his refusal to package enlightenment as a commodity or spiritual life as a consumer choice.
