Spiritual Workshop
Description
Celebrating & Nurturing Interdependence is a spiritual workshop at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York, led by yoga teacher Reggie Hubbard. Over a weekend, it brings together conversation, writing, deep listening, light movement, sound and meditation to explore what connects us as human beings. It is open to anyone curious about community, shared stories, and the ways we belong to one another.
The starting point is a simple observation: we live in a world that rewards individual achievement, and our digital lives have worn away some of the shared conversation, meditation and contemplation that in-person gathering offers. This workshop makes room to practice the art of being in community again, and to bring home a deeper understanding of how we are connected in an era of increasing isolation.
What to Expect
The workshop runs from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Friday begins with check-in in the late afternoon, with rooms available after 5:00 p.m., and the first session runs from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday has two sessions, 9:00 a.m. to noon and 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday closes with a morning session from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and check-out is at 1:00 p.m. The faculty may adjust the schedule.
The work is participatory. You can expect group discussion, writing, sharing, and sonic and meditation practice. Through conversation, listening to others and to yourself, light movement and meditation, the group builds what the organizer calls the muscle memory of shared existence and healing in community. The shared ground includes dreams and disappointments, joys and sorrows.
About Reggie Hubbard
Reggie Hubbard is a yoga teacher and the founder and chief serving officer of Active Peace LLC. Active Peace is a practice designed to help people nurture peace of mind, creativity, equanimity in spirit and physical health. His own yoga and meditation path began with curiosity and the compassionate invitation of dear friends, was forged in adversity, and has become a lesson in surrender to the possibilities that come with committing to personal peace of mind and wellbeing. He is committed to helping others move through this crazy world with more grace and space.
The Setting
The workshop takes place on the Omega Institute campus in Rhinebeck, New York. Participants who stay on campus choose from several kinds of lodging, from cabin rooms with a queen bed, heat, ceiling fan and air-conditioning, to a dorm single, simple tent cabins with bathhouses nearby, and limited campsites for those who bring their own gear. Double rooms are available to people who register with a companion. Meals are included for those staying on campus, along with the use of campus facilities, walking trails and optional classes. Accessible rooms are available by request through Omega's registration team.
People who live nearby, or prefer to stay off campus, can register as commuters. Commuter registration also includes meals and use of the facilities and amenities.
Before You Go
No prior experience with yoga, meditation or contemplative practice is needed. The workshop is taught in English and is open to all levels.
To prepare, consider the elements we have in common and the ways we are harmed by notions of independence. Three books are suggested for reading beforehand:
- Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma and Our World by Thomas Hübl
- Mentally Calm, Spiritually Connected: The Interdependence of Mind and Spirit by Scott Frazer
- All About Love by bell hooks
Tuition covers workshop instruction and time with the faculty. Lodging is booked separately. If you are staying in a tent cabin or dorm, bring your own sheets and towels, or sleeping bag where noted. Tent cabin guests can rent bedding from Omega for a small fee. Campers should bring a tent and all camping gear, and note that stoves, campfires and recreational vehicles are not allowed on campus.
