Jon Brooks's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

A note on identity: this profile concerns Jon Brooks, the Stoicism and meditation teacher behind The Stoic Handbook podcast. He is not the Canadian singer-songwriter of the same name.

The Shape of the Teaching

Brooks presents Stoicism as a trained skill rather than a body of ideas to admire. His own comparison is the gym or the mat: you don't understand your way into competence, you repeat something until it holds under pressure. That framing shapes everything else. A session, whether a guided meditation or a conversation on the podcast, is built to be used. It is organized around the moment the practice will be needed, such as the anxious spiral, the reactive reply, or the stuck afternoon.

His public work comes mainly in two forms. The first is the guided meditation, which has reached millions of listens on Insight Timer. These are short, directive, and oriented toward a single move: notice what is happening, separate it from what you control, and decide what to do next. The second is the long-form interview. On The Stoic Handbook, which has passed 500,000 downloads, he talks with figures such as Donald Robertson and Jules Evans, and the stated aim is to ask what works rather than what Stoic theory says. The public record shows less about live retreats or workshops, so it would be a mistake to describe their texture in detail. What the recorded work suggests is a pragmatic, instruction-forward style rather than an atmosphere of reverence.

Recurring Themes

One idea anchors nearly everything: you don't need to control what happens to you; you need to get better at what you do next. This is the Stoic dichotomy of control, translated from doctrine into a rehearsal. Around it cluster several related concerns:

  • Practice over theory. Reading is a starting point, and the test is behavior under stress.
  • Emotional reactivity. Anxiety, anger, and being stuck come up more often than abstract questions of virtue or cosmology.
  • The mind as an adversary and a training partner. His reference to "3am arguments with his own mind" signals that the work is mostly about ordinary mental friction.
  • Embodied discipline. His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background gives him a ready analogy for composure while being uncomfortably pressed.

The Questions He Pushes

The questions follow from the core principle, and they are practical:

  • What part of this is actually up to me?
  • What is my next action, as opposed to my preferred outcome?
  • Am I responding to the event, or to the story I'm telling about it?
  • What would it look like to do this well, even if it goes badly?

These are less open-ended koans than working prompts. They are meant to be asked in the moment and answered quickly, which is also where their limit lies. They train a response more than they invite long contemplation of who is asking.

The Aesthetic of Delivery

From the recorded work, the voice is plainspoken and conversational. The coaching and martial arts background shows in a preference for concrete scenarios over abstraction. Stoic sources such as Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and Seneca function as touchstones, closer to a trainer's reference manual than to sacred text. There is little suggestion of mystical register, and the tags that associate him with devotion and prayer should be read lightly: if those elements appear, they are likely quieter than the practical Stoic frame.

Silence, in the guided meditations, serves the exercise. It is room to rehearse rather than to dissolve into. Humor and self-deprecation seem to come mainly through admitting his own mental struggles, which keeps the teaching from sounding like a performance of calm. I would hold any finer claims about his use of story or live humor loosely, since the available material doesn't establish them.

Who It Lands For, and Who May Bounce

It lands most readily for people who are skeptical of spirituality but willing to practice: professionals, athletes, and people managing anxiety who want a tool rather than a worldview. The emphasis on action and the steady refusal to dwell on theory make it accessible to beginners. It also suits people who have read some Stoicism and found that it didn't change how they behave.

It may frustrate others. Those seeking depth of devotional experience, radical non-dual inquiry, or a long unpicking of the self will likely find the "what do I do next" orientation too managerial. Critics of popular Stoicism sometimes argue that it risks becoming self-optimization, with composure treated as a performance metric and the ethical and communal dimensions of the ancient schools underplayed. Brooks's framing around personal response invites that critique, though the guests he hosts, who are serious scholars and practitioners of the tradition, partly offset it. Anyone dealing with trauma or circumstances that are unjust rather than merely difficult may also find "control what you can" an incomplete answer.

The Wider Tradition

Brooks belongs to the modern revival of Stoicism as practical philosophy. Donald Robertson's work on Stoicism and cognitive behavioral therapy is its clearest scholarly parallel, and Jules Evans's writing on philosophy as a way of life comes from the same movement. The lineage runs back through Pierre Hadot's reading of ancient philosophy as spiritual exercise to the Stoics themselves, who thought of philosophy as something one does daily. Brooks adds the secular meditation world, with its app-based, short-form delivery, and the combat-sport culture of repetition and pressure testing. That combination is his distinctive contribution: less a new interpretation of Stoicism than a gym-style delivery system for it.

AboutJon Brooks

Jon Brooks teaches Stoicism as a daily practice — not as philosophy you read about, but as something you train, the way you'd train a skill in the gym or on the mat.
