A Name That Means Cessation

Nirodha is a Sanskrit word for cessation: the stilling of mental noise, the quieting that contemplative traditions have long described as the doorway to clarity. As the name of a music project, it works less as a brand than as a statement of purpose. Nirodha is the meditative music of Daniel Espada, a composer, multi-instrumentalist and kirtan facilitator based in Madrid, Spain.

Espada has spent more than a decade asking a deceptively simple question: what can sound do to a restless mind? He has pursued the answer in several settings at once, in recordings made largely alone at night, in meditation circles, at yoga festivals and in kirtan evenings. His guiding idea, repeated in how he describes the work, is that stillness is not something you achieve but something you remember. That framing shapes everything about the music. It is not built to lead a listener somewhere dramatic. It is built to get out of the way.

Origins and Approach

Madrid is Espada's home and the base from which the project operates. Beyond that, the public record is thin. The details of his childhood, his musical training and the specific moment that drew him toward meditative sound are not documented in the sources available, and it would be a disservice to the reader to invent them. What can be said is that the work has been sustained over more than a decade, long enough to suggest a practice rather than a passing interest.

What the music itself reveals is a distinct philosophy of instrumentation. Nirodha is built on native flute, classical guitar, harmonium, tanpura and voice. Each was chosen for a particular quality: the ability to hold a single tone without demanding attention. These are instruments that sustain rather than announce. A tanpura drone, a long breath through a flute, a harmonium chord left to decay are all sounds that create space instead of filling it.

Espada records alone, mostly at night, using whatever instrument gets out of the way fastest. The method is part of the aesthetic. Late hours and solitude are conditions in which a performer can listen as closely as the eventual audience will.

Two Threads

The catalogue runs along two parallel lines. The first is instrumental music for sleep and stillness. The second is voice-led Sanskrit mantra and kirtan, the call-and-response devotional singing tradition in which repetition becomes a form of meditation.

The two threads complement each other. The instrumental pieces serve the listener who wants to be accompanied into rest without words. The kirtan and mantra work invites participation, using voice and repeated phrases to settle the mind through engagement instead of absence. Together they cover the two ways people tend to approach quiet: by being held in it, or by singing their way toward it.

Major Works

Espada has released three albums. Two are named in the available record, and each illustrates one of the project's concerns.

Surya pairs nylon-string guitar with tanpura. The combination is spare: the guitar's warm, plucked tones set against the continuous hum of the drone, a pairing that places a familiar Western instrument inside an Indian classical sonic frame.

Chants from the Heart sets mantras to harmonium, voice and silence. The inclusion of silence in that description is telling. In this work, the pauses are treated as part of the composition rather than gaps between the notes.

A further project, Night Sanctuary, is an album in progress. It features native Latin American flute and is designed for sleep. Rather than arriving all at once, it is being released one track at a time, an approach that suits music meant to be returned to nightly. As an unfinished work, it represents the current direction of the project.

The Current Chapter

At present, Espada's work moves along three fronts. The first is the continuing release of Night Sanctuary. The second is his teaching and presence online: more than 12,000 people follow his work on Insight Timer, where he also offers guided sleep and mantra courses. On Spotify, his audience is smaller, at roughly 4,100 followers, which places him firmly in the category of independent, word-of-mouth artists rather than chart-driven ones.

The third front is live performance. Nirodha plays meditation concerts, kirtan circles and sound journeys in small rooms, including retreats, yoga spaces and festivals across Europe. Espada typically sits on the floor with harmonium, flute and voice and uses little amplification. The settings are arranged so that people can lie down and listen. He performs and speaks to the room in either Spanish or English, which allows him to move comfortably between audiences in Spain and the wider European circuit.

Cultural Significance

Nirodha occupies a particular and increasingly important space: music made for the nervous system rather than for the spotlight. Many people now come to meditation through apps and streaming playlists, often searching for help with sleep or anxiety. Espada meets them there, through Insight Timer courses and sleep tracks, but his live work and his devotional material root that same impulse in older practices of communal chanting and attentive listening.

His reach is therefore both intimate and distributed. In a room of a few dozen people lying on the floor of a yoga space, the experience is direct and physical. Online, the same sensibility travels to listeners he will never meet, who might encounter a single track of Night Sanctuary at the end of a long day.

There is also something worth noting in his bilingual practice and his use of native Latin American flute alongside Sanskrit mantra. The project draws on traditions from several parts of the world and brings them together in a European context, in a way that feels guided by the instruments' qualities rather than by novelty.

Why It Matters

Espada is not a figure of spectacle, and his work does not ask for that kind of attention. Its significance lies in restraint: the conviction that a single sustained tone, offered honestly, can be enough. In a culture saturated with stimulation, music that aims to dissolve the listener's effort is a quiet form of generosity.

Whether through a harmonium in a small room, a flute on a late-night recording or a mantra sung back and forth in a circle, Nirodha returns to the same premise: the stillness is already there. The music is simply a way of remembering it.
