Where to Start with Dali: A Beginner's Guide

Dali is an accredited meditation teacher (British School of Meditation, teaching since 2022). He grew up in the North East of England, lives in London, and first encountered meditation in India. If you've never meditated, or have tried and bounced off, he's a sensible place to begin because his work is built around the ordinary obstacles of daily life rather than spiritual ambition.

The Single Best Entry Point

Start with his beginners' introduction. It is the one offering designed for someone with no background, and it sets up the vocabulary and posture that everything else assumes. Don't skip to the more specialised material first. Even if you're drawn by a specific problem, an hour spent on fundamentals will make the rest far more useful.

The Next Three Places to Go

1. His guided meditations. After the introduction, practise with his voice leading you. Guidance is the easiest way to learn, because you never have to wonder whether you're "doing it right." Pick a few and repeat them rather than hunting for novelty. 2. Living With Anger. This is his five-lesson course, and it's his most focused piece of work. You don't need to be an angry person. If irritation, resentment, or a short fuse shows up in your relationships or at work, this is where his approach becomes practical. 3. A 1:1 or group online session. Once you have some practice behind you, live sessions give you something recordings can't: questions answered and a feeling of practising alongside others. His stated vision is a community of meditators who support each other, and the group format is closest to that.

What to Expect on a First Encounter

Expect a secular, unpretentious approach. Dali borrows from Buddhism and other philosophies, but you won't be asked to adopt a belief system. The emphasis is on removing the barriers that get in the way of peace, calm, and happiness, instead of chasing special states. Expect themes of kindness, respect, and patience, and a steady reminder that everyone is on their own path. That last idea shapes his tone: there's no pressure to perform, and no ranking of good and bad meditators.

Common Beginner Misunderstandings

"I'm supposed to empty my mind." Meditation isn't the absence of thoughts. Noticing that you've wandered and returning is the practice itself.

"This is a religion in disguise." The approach draws on Buddhism, but it is generally secular. You can take the techniques without the doctrine.

"The anger course is only for people with serious anger problems." It's equally useful for everyday friction, such as traffic, a curt email, or a family argument.

"If I feel calm right away, it's working; if I don't, I'm failing." Early sessions are often restless or dull. That's normal, and calm tends to arrive as a cumulative effect rather than a switch.

"Peace is something to achieve." His framing is subtler: clear away what blocks calm, and it has the best chance of being present. It's less about acquiring something than about removing obstacles.

When This Work Lands Hardest

This work tends to land hardest during periods of friction rather than crisis: a stressful stretch at work, a relationship in which you keep reacting in ways you regret, or a life transition that leaves you feeling frayed. It also suits people who are sceptical of spiritual language but curious about mental training. If you've noticed that you're quick to anger, or that your reactions seem to run ahead of your intentions, that is the ideal moment to begin.

A One-Week Starter Plan

Day 1: Do the beginners' introduction. Don't multitask. Afterwards, note in a sentence how you feel.

Day 2: Choose one guided meditation and do it in the morning, before your phone.

Day 3: Repeat the same meditation. Repetition is the point, and you'll notice differences you missed the first time.

Day 4: Start Living With Anger with lesson one. Over the day, jot down two moments when you felt irritation and what preceded them.

Day 5: Do lesson two, if you can pace it, or return to a guided meditation if you'd rather consolidate. The course is five lessons, so there's no need to rush it into one week.

Day 6: Do a guided meditation at a different time of day, perhaps in the evening, to see when it suits you best.

Day 7: Review. Which session did you look forward to? Which did you resist? Use that to decide whether to continue the anger course, build a daily guided practice, or book a 1:1 or group online session to ask questions with a teacher.

The goal for the week isn't transformation. It's finding out whether this approach fits you, with enough repetition to give you a fair answer.
