Meditation Teacher · Germany
Stephan Pende Wormland is a meditation and mindfulness teacher who brings together Eastern philosophy and Western psychology. He was born in 1965 in Germany and has studied and practiced meditation in multiple traditions for over 40 years. His teaching centers on what he calls going beyond mindfulness: recognizing that we already have everything we need to be complete in this moment, and finding the warmth of the heart along the way.
His psychological grounding comes from a master's degree in clinical psychology, training in Gestalt therapy, and six years of work at a psychiatric hospital. He was also an ordained Tibetan Buddhist monk for 11 years, five of them spent in group and solitary retreats, and he served as director of Nalanda Monastery in the south of France. His main teacher was the late Lama Zopa Rinpoche, spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition. He also received teachings from Tibetan masters of the four schools, including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and has studied with Western teachers such as Peter Fenner, Alan Wallace, Pema Chodron and Robert Thurman.
Since 2009 Stephan has studied Radiant Mind with Peter Fenner. He completed the Nondual Teacher Training and acts as a program adviser for the Potential Project. For many years he was the resident teacher of the Center for Visdom og Medfølelse in Copenhagen, and he now leads meditation events and retreats in Buddhist centers around Europe. His approach draws on Radiant Mind, mindfulness and meditation, the gradual and sudden methods of awakening in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, psychodynamic understanding, and mindful communication.
Alongside his group teaching, he offers spiritual mentoring, mindfulness coaching and professional supervision. He also shares talks and guided meditations through his YouTube channel and podcasts in English and German. Students describe him as a kind, grounded presence who explains the Buddhist teachings in a way a Western mind can easily take in.
Worth Knowing
Stephan Pende Wormland is a meditation teacher and former Tibetan Buddhist monk who synthesizes classical Buddhist training with Western clinical psychology and contemplative nondual approaches. Born in Germany in 1965, he brings forty years of continuous meditation practice—including eleven years as an ordained monk and five spent in extended retreats—into teaching that addresses both the mind's habitual patterns and the heart's capacity for warmth and openness. His lineage is grounded in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, particularly the Gelug school through his principal teacher Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the late spiritual director of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT). What distinguishes him is his refusal of an either-or stance: students come because his teaching demonstrates that rigorous Buddhist philosophy and contemporary Western psychology—his master's degree in clinical psychology and Gestalt therapy training—need not contradict each other. He teaches that meditation is not primarily about blissful states or escape from difficulty, but about recognizing an aliveness and completeness already present underneath habitual reactivity. His particular emphasis on what he calls "going beyond mindfulness" and finding the "warmth of the heart" suggests a teacher invested in the fullness of awakening, not merely stress reduction.
