Burgs is the founder of The Art of Meditation, an organisation offering online meditation courses, retreats and recorded teachings. He has been teaching and holding retreats for over 25 years, and is known for teaching beginners while guiding long-time meditators toward deeper levels of accomplishment.
His teaching style is strongly influenced by three principal teachers: Pa Auk Sayadaw (Burma), His Holiness Dodrupchen Rinpoche (India) and Bapak Merta Ada (Bali). His seven-day meditation foundation programme draws on what he learned from them and from the fruits of his own practice.
The work spans several paths. Self-paced courses begin with The Stillness Programme, an introduction to the fundamentals of meditation, and continue through Level 1: The Art of Meditation, which covers concentration and mindfulness, and Level 2: Healing Meditation. Further programmes cover Internal Alchemy, which brings together chi kung, breathwork and energy practices, and a course for working with anxiety. His retreats include vipassana, Internal Alchemy reset retreats and a Tibetan thangka art and meditation retreat co-hosted with the painter Carmen Mensink.
Burgs has written that art, calligraphy and other crafts helped him recover from a brain trauma, alongside his meditation, and he has since brought such crafts into his retreats. The Art of Meditation holds that meditation is not a science but a profound journey into the deepest aspects of being alive, and that one who masters their own mind moves joyfully through life and makes an "art of just being."
He shares guided meditations, discourses and live sessions with a community on Patreon. His teachings are also collected in an audio library and a podcast, and his books include an autobiography.
Worth Knowing
Burgs is the founder of The Art of Meditation, an organization that has operated for over 25 years, teaching both absolute beginners and experienced meditators through courses, live retreats, and recorded discourses. What sets him apart is a rare pedagogical patience: he doesn't bulldoze newcomers into esoteric territory, but he also doesn't plateau long-time practitioners with beginner instruction. His teaching lineage draws from three substantial teachers across different Buddhist and energy traditions—Pa Auk Sayadaw from Burma, His Holiness Dodrupchen Rinpoche from Tibet (India-based), and Bapak Merta Ada from Bali—which means his curriculum spans vipassana, Dzogchen-influenced approaches, and energy-cultivation practices that most Western meditation teachers don't attempt to integrate. People follow his work because it's neither faddish nor diluted; it treats meditation as a rigorous, years-long journey rather than a wellness hack. His honesty about the non-scientific, philosophical depth of the practice—what he calls the "art of just being"—resonates with seekers tired of commercialized mindfulness packaging.
