Kavita Kat Macmillan is a devotional musician, vocalist and transformational creative guide based in Portland, Oregon. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching, sharing kirtan, and studying naad (sound) yoga and Hindustani vocal practice. Her Open Heart Kirtan sets traditional mantras within original compositions that carry both Western and Indian influences.
Her path started in theater, which she trained in as a child. A dance teacher in Los Angeles introduced her to yoga and encouraged her to move to New York City. There she trained extensively in yoga and was drawn to Butoh through the dancer Vangeline. She also met the composer Michael Harrison, a western disciple of Pandit Pran Nath, and he led her to other senior students of that lineage. One of them was Sri Karunamayee, formerly of the Sri Aurobindo ashram in Delhi, whom Kavita travelled to India to study with. Karunamayee gave her the name Kavita, which means "poet" or "muse." Other teachers include Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Rik Masterson. She currently studies with Warren Senders and with Sri Shyamji Bhatnagar.
Kavita teaches voice and harmonium. Her aim is to help people soften, listen inward and find their own authentic voice, whatever their background or musical experience. She works through mantra, sound yoga and devotional singing. She offers private sessions in person and online, workshops, retreats and festival appearances, and she leads the Art of Sound & Mantra Mentorship, a twelve-month program for developing voice and devotional practice. It serves aspiring kirtan artists and anyone with a personal Sacred Sound practice.
Her album The Beloved Lives Inside was co-produced with and features Grammy-winning instrumentalist Hans Christian, along with Jai Uttal, Daniel Paul, Steve Gorn and Will Marsh. Her "Sweet Sri Hanuman Chalisa" appears on the Bhaktimala for Ram Dass. Her "Guru Kripa Hanuman Chalisa" appears on a Gods and Goddesses compilation for the Know Thyself as Soul organization. She has shared the stage with Jai Uttal, Krishna Das, Gina Sala, Benjy and Heather Wertheimer, David Newman, Dave Stringer, Daniel Paul and Steve Gorn.
Worth Knowing
Kavita Kat MacMillan is a Portland-based kirtan artist and vocal instructor who has spent more than two decades cultivating a distinctive approach to devotional singing rooted in Hindustani vocal practice, naad yoga, and lineage study with senior teachers in the Pandit Pran Nath tradition. What draws listeners and students to her work is her refusal of kitsch—her kirtan performances and teaching place equal weight on precise vocal technique, Sanskrit pronunciation, and the meditative stillness of sound itself, rather than emotional catharsis or sentimentality. Her "Open Heart Kirtan" framework threads traditional mantras through original compositions that deliberately blend Western harmonic sensibility with Indian classical music sensibility, creating a sound that feels neither purely Indian nor borrowed. She teaches voice and harmonium with the explicit aim of helping students find their own authentic voice, whether they arrive with years of training or no musical background whatsoever. Her work appeals particularly to practitioners who want rigor alongside devotion—people looking for genuine lineage transmission rather than a yoga-studio chant accompaniment.
