MC YOGI is an internationally known recording artist, award-winning author and seasoned yoga teacher. He grew up painting graffiti in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a teenager he was expelled and suspended from schools and arrested for graffiti, and he ended up in a group home for at-risk youth. At seventeen he discovered yoga through his father, and the practice redirected his life. In those early years he shaved his head and lived and studied like a monk.
His path took him through many teachers and traditions. He mentored with Larry Schultz, his father's teacher, who led him to Larry's own teachers, including Dorthy Divack and the yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. He spent years studying with the Vedanta society of the Ramakrishna order and traveled repeatedly to India. A 2010 visit to Arunachala opened him to Advaita Vedanta. Time with the Krishna community of devotees brought his love of sacred chanting to the center of his work. He came to regard Shri Neem Karoli Baba as his Guru.
In 2008 he made his first album, Elephant Power, which bridged yogic philosophy, mythology and chanting with a modern electronic sound. Classic hip hop break beats, catchy hooks and mystical melodies gave rise to what he describes as a new genre of yoga-inspired hip hop. The album featured Krishna Das and Jai Uttal. Later releases include Only Love Is Real, with Matisyahu and Trevor Hall, which debuted at #12 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Ritual Mystical, featuring East Forest, reached #1 on the Electronic charts in August 2016. His latest album, Sound Patterns, pairs downtempo electronic music with mantras and personal prayers.
He has taught and performed at yoga and music festivals in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Germany, India and China, and at the White House. His memoir, Spiritual Graffiti, won a Silver Nautilus Book Award. With nearly 30 years of experience, he teaches yoga and meditation in a joyful, poetic style, through retreats, a meditation teacher training and his own app. He still paints and designs on the side.

Worth Knowing
MC YOGI (born Nicholas Christian Giacomini) represents a rare convergence: a hip hop artist with genuine credibility in the yoga and mantra traditions, and a spiritual practitioner whose roots stay planted in the street culture he emerged from. After growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area painting graffiti as a teenager—eventually landing in the legal and social margins (arrests, expulsion, a group home)—he discovered yoga at seventeen through his father, a discovery that fundamentally redirected his trajectory. Rather than renounce his hip hop lineage, he integrated it; the result is a twenty-eight-year career teaching yoga and meditation, recording albums that pair electronic production with Sanskrit mantras, and building a genuine following across both spiritual and music communities. What distinguishes him from adjacent figures is neither his technical skill alone nor his devotional depth, but his refusal to separate those worlds. Listeners and students care because he proves—through lived experience—that spiritual practice and hip hop culture aren't opposites; they're interdependent paths toward the same inquiry about identity, meaning, and transformation. Our full piece on MC YOGI's life and work, "Who Is MC YOGI? Life, Work, and Legacy," explores this arc in depth.
