Kirtan in Times of Silence: The Maha Mantra as Lifeline

The morning light falls across the Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, New York, September 4th, 2023. In a room filled with musicians, practitioners, and seekers—what Jahnavi Harrison will later call "probably the biggest kirtan I've been in probably about five years"—the Maha Mantra begins to build, layer by layer. The sound, at first tentative, then resolute, fills the space: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare. For Harrison, this moment carries three years of reckoning—from the isolation of 2020, when she and her brother and mother sat alone in a room, streaming kirtan online to a handful of listeners, to now, leading a crowd that feels, by its own measure, unprecedented in her practice life.

What Is the Maha Mantra, and Why Does It Matter Now?

The Maha Mantra—the "great mantra"—is rooted in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, a lineage of Krishna devotion that emerged in 16th-century India with the saint-philosopher Sri Chaitanya. The mantra itself is ancient, but its modern prominence in Western spiritual practice owes much to the global expansion of Krishna Consciousness in the 1960s and beyond. Yet for Harrison, the mantra's significance isn't historical; it's intimate. "It's really been like the heartbeat of our life," she tells the Omega gathering. "It's always there, and it's a thread running through our life—not just a thread, but it's almost like a rope that we hold on to."

That metaphor—a rope you hold—reveals something essential about how she approaches the practice. The Maha Mantra isn't a song to perform, nor a meditation to optimize for personal calm. It's a lifeline. In her account, this becomes evident when she speaks about the pandemic years: what began as "initially just in support of my community" during the obvious isolation of 2020 became something unexpected. People started joining the live stream. It grew. The number climbing in real time as the world splintered into homes. And in that moment of technological connection—a brother, a mother, and eventually thousands of unseen voices singing in unison—Harrison discovered something that would reshape how she understands the practice itself.

The Teaching Hidden in Humility and Tolerance

On the second morning of the Omega fest, Harrison turns to an anchor point: a verse from Sri Chaitanya's teachings that, she says, gives "a clue to what we need to be in this state of connection and joy and fulfillment of heart that we feel when we come together and chant in this way." The verse, sung across kirtan traditions for centuries, speaks to radical humility. Trees, she explains, teach the first lesson—they survive drought and flood, heat and frost, without complaint. "Vaishnavas," she notes—"those who chant the name of Hari"—are like trees. But there's more: "one who is more humble than a blade of grass that allows itself to be just at the lowest point of the ground."

This isn't abstract philosophy. Harrison connects it to the word namaha, which appears in the chanting: "bowing our head down, really understanding that my natural position, a place that is fulfilling to my heart, is one of humility, tolerance, and also offering respect to everyone without thinking of what I'm going to get in return. That's the hardest thing."

The clarity here is striking because it names the obstacle directly: unconditional love is hard. Not because it's complicated, but because the ego resists it. We chant, we feel elevated, we return to our ordinary lives, and the ordinary life—with its transactions, its calculations, its "what will I get back?"—pulls us away. Harrison is describing a cycle she knows intimately. The kirtan becomes real when humility, tolerance, and unconditional giving aren't concepts but practices, embodied moment to moment.

From Isolation to Resonance: The 2020 Awakening

In early 2020, Harrison made a choice that, in retrospect, defines this entire arc. As the world locked down and communities scattered, she decided to offer daily kirtan online—not as a broadcast, but as a gathering. It was, at the start, a small family practice: just her brother, her mother, and herself in a room, singing into a screen. There was no plan for it to grow. There was no strategy. It was survival, really—a way to hold something sacred when everything else was falling apart.

But people found it. The livestream grew. And Harrison witnessed something she hadn't expected: the energetic coherence of practice across distance. By the time of the Omega event in September 2023, this insight had crystallized into explicit teaching. "I just wanted to remind anyone who's watching at home," she tells the livestream audience, "that it really does make a difference if you sing or not. Even though we might not hear you with our ears, we all know through our times in 2020 that we feel the energetic connection through the ether."

This is not metaphorical language in her mouth. She lived it. For months, she felt the presence of unseen singers, and the presence was real. The coherence was real. In one of the paradoxes of contemporary spiritual practice, isolation became the condition for recognizing that true connection doesn't depend on physical proximity. The mantra itself—chanted in unison across continents—became proof.

Why This Matters: The Craft of Kirtan

Kirtan is often treated in Western wellness contexts as a tool for stress relief, a musical meditation, something to enhance the yoga class. But Harrison's approach restores it to what it was always meant to be: a relational practice. The Sanskrit opening invocations recited at the beginning of the session—prayers to the lineage of guru figures, to Krishna, to Radha, to the assembled saints—aren't decoration. They're establishment. They say: This is not my show. This is not your show. This is a lineage, a tradition, a conversation with the sacred that precedes us and exceeds us.

The Maha Mantra itself, chanted across two-plus hours in the Omega room, unfolds with the structure of a raga—a melodic framework that allows for deep exploration. Names repeat; breath aligns; the mind, if given permission, begins to settle into a groove beneath the surface churn of thought. But Harrison's role is not to soothe; it's to invite genuine emotional surrender. The repeated invocation to Krishna, to Rama, creates a channel. The musician—Harrison on harmonium, her collaborators on drums, bass, vocals—is not performing for the audience. The audience and performer dissolve into one entity: singers.

Unconditional Love as the Gateway

The hardest part of the teaching Harrison offers isn't the Sanskrit, the melody, or the discipline. It's the willingness to give without expecting return. In the ordinary world, we're trained for transaction: I do good, good returns to me. I smile, I'm smiled back at. I give, I receive. But the teachings of Sri Chaitanya and the Gaudiya Vaishnava lineage propose something radically different: that the highest joy comes from loving without condition, from offering without scorecard.

This is where the three years from lockdown isolation to Omega's crowded hall become significant. In 2020, when Harrison sat with her mother and brother in a small room, singing to a camera, there was no immediate reciprocity. The thousands of people joining the livestream were invisible. The gratitude might never reach her. She was chanting because something in her refused to abandon the practice when it mattered most. That refusal—that loyalty to something beyond personal benefit—is the soil in which genuine connection grows.

By September 2023, she stands in a room of five hundred or more people, all holding the rope together. She can see their faces, feel their energy, hear them sing. But the practice is the same: unconditional offering. She is not performing to be loved. She is loving—through sound, through presence, through the willingness to be vulnerable in front of a crowd—and in that love, connection happens.

The Practice Continues: Holding the Rope

What's remarkable about Harrison's teaching is that she doesn't promise transformation—not the kind the wellness industry sells, anyway. She doesn't say: chant this mantra and your stress will disappear. She says something harder and more honest: chant this mantra, cultivate humility like trees, be willing to love unconditionally, and you'll experience states of "joy and fulfillment of heart." But you'll also return to the day-to-day, to ordinary life, to the pull of the world. And the rope—the thread, the mantra itself—is there to hold.

That's the arc from 2020 to 2023 compressed: from isolation to congregation, from survival to celebration, but also the recognition that the mantra doesn't transform the world; it transforms our relationship to it. We still live in times of silence, in times of separation, in times when unconditional love is nearly impossible. The Maha Mantra doesn't erase those times. It teaches us how to move through them without losing the heart.

[5:25] good morning

[5:28] thank you so much for being here I know

[5:31] many of you are were here last night and

[5:33] so were some of us so I think we're all

[5:36] on the same page

[5:38] we want to squeeze every last drop from

[5:40] this weekend before we have to go home

[5:46] um I'm extremely grateful to be here and

[5:49] to be here with so many friends and

[5:53] um

[5:53] friends and amazing musicians and and

[5:57] bhaktas I think that's one of the

[6:00] real treats of coming together in a

[6:03] space like this that all of the amazing

[6:05] musicians also have hearts full of

[6:07] devotion and that makes everything just

[6:10] Elevate so incredibly so yesterday we

[6:14] were running through some things in the

[6:16] room to the side there and we were

[6:18] thinking I wish we could just spend

[6:20] every day like this it's so wonderful

[6:22] just being with each other

[6:25] um so thank you again for being here for

[6:27] this last session

[6:29] [Music]

[6:31] try I will try not to talk too much

[6:33] sometimes if I haven't slept very much

[6:36] but uh we'll we'll dive in first to the

[6:40] Maha Mantra which uh we sang

[6:44] quite a bit on Friday when I don't know

[6:47] how many of you are here but

[6:49] I was just saying that the Maha Mantra

[6:52] or the Hare Krishna Mantra is is one

[6:55] that in my life and in the life of some

[6:58] of my friends who grew up in a similar

[7:00] way it's really been uh like the

[7:03] heartbeat of our life it's always there

[7:06] and it's a thread running through our

[7:09] life

[7:10] not just a thread but it's almost like a

[7:12] rope that we hold on to and so it feels

[7:16] particularly special to be able to share

[7:18] it in in these times but we'll we'll

[7:20] sing some other songs as well later

[7:22] but let's start with the Maha Mantra and

[7:25] really try to dive in deep and as we do

[7:28] um

[7:29] I'm remembering

[7:31] the words of Sri chaitanya on Friday

[7:34] night I

[7:37] um sang one of them and those of you

[7:38] that know the kirtan artist goravani you

[7:41] might have heard his beautiful recording

[7:43] moods of kirtan

[7:47] but one of these prayers speaks about

[7:51] what is required to be

[7:55] in this state of

[7:57] joy and fulfillment of heart that we

[8:00] feel when we come together and chant in

[8:02] this way 24 7 because many of us

[8:05] experience like we feel like this for a

[8:07] while and then it's back to

[8:09] the day-to-day normal I I know I

[8:12] experienced that

[8:14] so the verse I'll sing it we can sing it

[8:16] together everyone who knows it

[8:27] is

[8:28] [Music]

[8:46] so this verse gives a clue to what we

[8:49] need to be in this uh a state of

[8:52] connection Sada all the time to the

[8:55] kirtan

[8:57] describes

[9:00] that we need to try to learn from the

[9:03] trees which we're in a good place to

[9:05] learn from trees

[9:06] a lot of trees around us with their

[9:09] natural tolerance of all kinds of

[9:11] situations I have a good view right now

[9:13] because I'm looking at them

[9:16] but actually it said that even

[9:21] vaishnavas are those who chant the name

[9:23] of Hari are also like trees so he can

[9:26] look around us we're all trees reminding

[9:29] because we we are practicing tolerance

[9:32] through all kinds of seasons and and

[9:35] situations of life

[9:37] um

[9:39] one who is

[9:41] more humble than a blade of grass that

[9:44] allows itself to be just at the at the

[9:48] lowest point of the ground so we're

[9:50] always when we say namaha the other

[9:51] night we were singing Namo namaha bowing

[9:54] our head down really understanding that

[9:56] my natural position a place that is

[9:58] fulfilling to my heart is one of

[10:00] humility

[10:02] humility tolerance and also offering

[10:05] respect to everyone

[10:08] without thinking of what I'm going to

[10:10] get in return that's the hardest thing

[10:13] right to

[10:15] um to do something to give love

[10:18] unconditionally when we can truly

[10:21] be unconditionally loving we come into

[10:25] connection with this kirtania sadahari

[10:28] so as we chat the Maha Mantra maybe we

[10:32] can focus on one of those things or

[10:34] something else that you would like to

[10:36] really invite more into your heart for

[10:39] the coming year because I know some of

[10:41] you come here every year and it's like

[10:44] something we can meditate on

[10:47] so if you don't already know the words

[10:51] Krishna we can say it together

[10:56] [Music]

[11:22] [Applause]

[11:23] [Music]

[14:02] so this morning we are live streaming

[14:05] and I just wanted to remind anyone who's

[14:08] watching at home that it really does

[14:10] make a difference if you sing or not

[14:12] even though we might not hear you with

[14:15] our ears

[14:16] we all know through our our times in

[14:19] 2020 that we feel the energetic

[14:23] connection through

[14:25] The Ether so please do sing with us at

[56:00] hi

[56:05] [Music]

[56:32] [Music]

[56:42] [Music]

[56:47] foreign

[56:52] it's really overwhelming to be to sing

[56:54] with you all it's really amazing I think

[56:56] this is the biggest kirtan I've been in

[56:58] probably about five years or something

[57:01] amazing

[57:07] I'll say again what I said on Friday

[57:09] because I know some of you were not here

[57:11] but

[57:12] um

[57:13] in the beginning of 2020 I started doing

[57:15] kirtan online every day mostly sort of

[57:19] initially just

[57:21] in support of my community because

[57:24] well obvious reasons why

[57:27] um

[57:28] but people started joining the live

[57:30] stream and it started growing and

[57:32] growing and it was so amazing

[57:34] it was just my brother my my mom and I

[57:38] in the room

[57:39] but I would see a number of you know the

[57:41] little red number on the screen and

[57:43] would you know go up and down but I was

[57:46] envisioning actually sometimes I would

[57:48] Envision this room because I had been

[57:50] here many years ago and you know it's

[57:51] like something to visualize

[57:53] and I was imagining that we that that

[57:56] little number is that we're together in

[57:58] a big Hall and we're all chanting and

[58:00] hearing people's voices and really

[58:02] praying for when that day will come so

[58:04] this is the day it's wonderful

[58:10] thank you

[58:13] so we have a special offering for you

[58:15] um

[58:16] in two days

[58:18] in two days Monday is it Monday yeah two

[58:21] days on Wednesday or Thursday depending

[58:24] which part of the world you're in

[58:27] is a sacred day holy day called Shri

[58:30] Krishna janmashtami and this is the

[58:34] sacred day that's spoken of in the

[58:36] bhagavat purana where SRI Krishna made

[58:40] his appearance

[58:42] um

[58:44] on the first day we sang These prayers

[58:46] of Queen kunti also from the bhagavat

[58:48] purana and she

[58:50] she says um

[59:01] anyway the verse goes on to say that she

[59:03] says you're you're just like an actor

[59:04] who appears on a stage that it's not

[59:07] that you're not there when you walk off

[59:09] the stage

[59:11] or that you weren't there before you

[59:13] came onto the stage but you come onto

[59:15] the stage and allow us to see you your

[59:18] Leela your your activities and interact

[59:21] with you so it's understood that this is

[59:23] the meaning behind SRI Krishna

[59:25] janmashtami how can that Supreme Being

[59:27] who's sachid Ananda be born and and have

[59:30] a body and you know be in this material

[59:33] world

[59:34] we we celebrate that day with so much

[59:36] gratitude and joy because

[59:40] from Sri krishna's appearance

[59:43] everything flows everything that we we

[59:46] are doing everything that we well I say

[59:48] we I speak for myself and anyone who

[59:51] feels the same

[59:53] um

[59:54] and uh yeah it's just a very a very

[59:57] special day

[59:58] um where I grew up where myself and my

[1:00:01] dear friend Nadia grew up is a place

[1:00:03] called bhaktiviranta Manor which was

[1:00:06] given by George Harrison of The Beatles

[1:00:08] I have to say of The Beatles because

[1:00:09] these days not all young people know

[1:00:11] know who George Harrison is but and I'm

[1:00:13] not related biologically to him also by

[1:00:16] the way yeah yeah yeah right so uh

[1:00:20] George Harrison

[1:00:21] um you know gave this property to the to

[1:00:23] the Krishna movement in the 70s and

[1:00:25] they started a small janmashtami

[1:00:27] Festival there

[1:00:29] at that time actually this year is

[1:00:32] celebrating the 50th year since they've

[1:00:34] been celebrating that and these days

[1:00:37] about 80 000 people come to celebrate

[1:00:40] together so

[1:00:42] um I haven't been able to be there for

[1:00:44] many years and I'm flying tomorrow to be

[1:00:47] there to get to celebrate

[1:00:50] oh no

[1:00:52] I hope my mom's not watching it's a

[1:00:54] surprise

[1:01:01] you have to pay to watch the live stream

[1:01:03] so hopefully she did

[1:01:12] okay

[1:01:17] let's forget she might have gone to the

[1:01:19] bathroom okay so um so we have a special

[1:01:23] offering

[1:01:24] because I don't know how many of you

[1:01:26] will make it to a celebration so let's

[1:01:28] say this is our janmashtami celebration

[1:01:30] and um because the wife of Anuj is a

[1:01:33] beautiful dancer she's trained in the

[1:01:35] Indian classical style of dance called

[1:01:37] kuchipudi

[1:01:39] and um she's going to also

[1:01:42] bring you into the dance if you would

[1:01:44] like you don't have to stand up it's

[1:01:46] okay you can stay seated I know we're

[1:01:48] all a little tired and you've danced

[1:01:50] amazingly just now

[1:01:51] um so this is a song called yeah let's

[1:01:53] give her a round of applause

[1:02:01] being as tolerant of as a tree to dance

[1:02:03] in such a tiny spot here

[1:02:07] um so This song is called

[1:02:14] it sounds like a mouthful right

[1:02:20] um

[1:02:21] I I'm really missing shamdas a lot for

[1:02:25] those of you that knew him and his

[1:02:26] picture of him is here and I thought I

[1:02:28] was thinking originally that this whole

[1:02:30] uh well I mean it doesn't have to be

[1:02:33] specifically a tribute I mean we just do

[1:02:35] kirtan and that's a tribute right this

[1:02:37] is what he loves to do but last time I

[1:02:39] was here he was here so I thought he

[1:02:41] would also very much appreciate this

[1:02:43] song

[1:02:44] so this song describes the beauty of

[1:02:46] Shri Krishna but specifically who has

[1:02:49] the name of Nanda nandana this is a name

[1:02:51] of small Krishna when he's just

[1:02:54] born or it just appeared and his

[1:02:57] father's name is Nanda Maharaja so

[1:03:01] ambika is going to show some gestures

[1:03:04] this is called a pinaya

[1:03:07] or natya showing showing what the

[1:03:10] meaning of the dances so that we can go

[1:03:12] deeper into the the poetry

[1:03:16] so the the refrain that we're going to

[1:03:18] sing together is namami

[1:03:22] foreign

[1:03:23] [Music]

[1:03:26] I think Deva premal recorded this song

[1:03:28] many years ago so some of you may might

[1:03:30] already know it

[1:03:32] we're just going to sing

[1:03:35] [Music]

[1:03:41] [Music]

[1:03:42] you did a great job

[1:03:45] especially considering how little sleep

[1:03:47] everybody has had so uh

[1:03:52] we're going to we're going to do the

[1:03:54] verses in between and every two verses

[1:03:56] we'll all join together in the chorus

[1:03:58] and not call in response we'll just sing

[1:04:00] it together and ambika is going to teach

[1:04:02] you some simple gestures if you would

[1:04:05] like and we can take these gestures as

[1:04:07] an offering to Sri Krishna for his

[1:04:10] birthday his appearance

[1:04:13] um you know it said that the the highest

[1:04:15] expression of devotion is to engage our

[1:04:20] our our speech our thoughts our

[1:04:24] actions

[1:04:26] our words our movements everything in

[1:04:29] service so when we use body and mind and

[1:04:34] voice this is really such a beautiful

[1:04:36] way to practice bhakti yoga which is the

[1:04:39] essence of why we're coming together for

[1:04:41] this whole weekend

[1:04:43] so if you feel inspired but definitely

[1:04:45] no pressure you can also just listen so

[1:04:48] I'll maybe I'll sing it so it's easier

[1:04:54] [Music]

[1:05:06] [Music]

[1:05:17] let's do that couple more times

[1:05:20] we sing it too as well if you if you

[1:05:23] feel

[1:05:24] foreign

[1:05:25] [Music]

[1:05:34] [Music]

[1:05:46] better now

[1:05:49] Mommy

[1:05:56] Mommy

[1:05:59] [Music]

[1:06:15] how beautiful

[1:06:18] okay so don't forget that I'm gonna

[1:06:21] remember it for when we dive in together

[1:06:24] um

[1:06:29] Ami same as the other day

[1:06:34] offering our heart unto that Supreme

[1:06:36] person who is known by

[1:06:38] many many many names Nanda nandana is

[1:06:42] just one name that describes a

[1:06:44] particular beautiful and very sweet

[1:06:46] aspect of that Supreme

[1:06:48] so unto that supremely sweet

[1:06:51] Lord

[1:06:53] we offer our hearts said that Shri

[1:06:55] Krishna and his lilas is very attached

[1:06:58] to soft

[1:07:00] butter fresh butter and so sometimes

[1:07:04] sometimes the analogy is made that we

[1:07:06] want to

[1:07:06] [Laughter]

[1:07:10] he doesn't mind getting it all over his

[1:07:11] face

[1:07:12] [Laughter]

[1:07:14] so we want to melt our hearts just like

[1:07:16] that butter and offer it to to Sri

[1:07:18] Krishna

[1:07:20] so we'll begin

[1:07:24] for pranam to Nanda nandana

[1:07:28] whose face is extremely delightful

[1:07:31] in whose beautiful Ears Hang jeweled

[1:07:35] earrings and whose entire body is

[1:07:38] Anointed with fragrant Sandalwood paste

[1:07:55] [Music]

[1:08:10] I offer pranam to Nanda nandana who eyes

[1:08:14] are more beautiful than the fully

[1:08:16] bloomed Lotus

[1:08:18] whose head is beautifully adorned with

[1:08:20] an arrangement of peacock feathers and

[1:08:23] who enchants millions of cupids

[1:08:29] [Music]

[1:08:48] get ready

[1:08:51] [Music]

[1:08:57] [Music]

[1:09:02] [Music]

[1:09:15] once more

[1:09:16] [Music]

[1:09:28] no

[1:09:31] [Music]

[1:09:34] no

[1:09:35] my mommy

[1:09:37] [Music]

[1:09:42] I offer my pranam to Nanda nandana

[1:09:47] from whose beautiful nose hangs a pearl

[1:09:51] whose teeth

[1:09:53] are immensely effulgent

[1:09:56] whose bodily complexion is more

[1:09:59] beautiful and lustrous than a fresh rain

[1:10:03] cloud

[1:10:06] foreign

[1:10:10] [Music]

[1:10:34] whose Lotus hands hold the flute whose

[1:10:38] lingering Gates

[1:10:40] defeats even that of an impassioned

[1:10:43] elephant

[1:10:45] and whose dark limbs are beautified by a

[1:10:48] yellow shawl

[1:10:54] Ita

[1:10:58] [Music]

[1:11:12] ready

[1:11:14] [Music]

[1:11:28] [Music]

[1:11:33] [Applause]

[1:11:38] [Music]

[1:11:51] [Music]

[1:11:58] foreign

[1:12:05] [Music]

[1:12:08] whose threefold bending posture is

[1:12:12] exquisitely elegant

[1:12:15] the effulgence of whose toenails put to

[1:12:19] shame even the moon imagine that

[1:12:22] and who wears invaluable jewels and

[1:12:26] ornaments

[1:12:30] [Music]

[1:12:34] bottom

[1:12:40] [Music]

[1:12:55] I offer pranam to Nanda nandana

[1:12:58] whose body

[1:13:00] exudes an especially beautiful fragrance

[1:13:04] and whose broad chest is adorned with a

[1:13:07] coast to by Jewel

[1:13:09] and the mark of shulatsa

[1:13:12] [Music]

[1:13:14] [Applause]

[1:13:23] [Music]

[1:13:36] no no

[1:13:38] no no no no no no no no no no no no no

[1:13:42] no no no no no no

[1:13:45] no no no

[1:13:48] no no no no

[1:13:49] [Music]

[1:14:06] no no no no no no

[1:14:10] [Music]

[1:14:26] foreign

[1:14:27] [Music]

[1:14:32] [Music]

[1:14:34] the expert lover of vrindavan who

[1:14:38] performs Immaculate pastimes

[1:14:42] and who is a tired in clothes which are

[1:14:45] suitable for those pastimes

[1:14:48] and

[1:14:50] Who as a small child

[1:14:52] [Music]

[1:14:54] pulverized the pride of Indra King of

[1:14:58] the heavens

[1:14:59] [Music]

[1:15:01] in Brackets when he lifted the govardhan

[1:15:04] hill

[1:15:08] Brenda

[1:15:10] [Music]

[1:15:14] Brenda

[1:15:15] [Music]

[1:15:33] I offer pronounce

[1:15:35] who as the lover of the rajagopis the

[1:15:39] maidens of Raja

[1:15:41] perpetually Delights them and who

[1:15:44] enchants the mind of all living entities

[1:15:49] [Music]

[1:16:01] [Applause]

[1:16:01] [Music]

[1:16:07] hello

[1:16:09] come on

[1:16:13] [Music]

[1:16:13] [Applause]

[1:16:14] [Music]

[1:16:24] [Music]

[1:16:26] [Applause]

[1:16:31] [Music]

[1:16:44] [Applause]

[1:16:47] [Music]

[1:16:53] thank you

[1:16:57] foreign

[1:17:00] [Music]

[1:17:21] [Music]

[1:17:25] [Applause]

[1:17:25] [Music]

[1:17:30] thank you

[1:17:39] [Music]

[1:17:54] [Music]

[1:18:20] foreign

[1:18:25] [Music]

[1:18:59] that was incredibly beautiful

[1:19:02] so

[1:19:03] maybe we can make a little pact together

[1:19:06] that on Wednesday or Thursday we just

[1:19:10] offer a little

[1:19:12] wherever we are

[1:19:14] we'll be connected in that way

[1:19:15] celebrating together

[1:19:18] so um

[1:19:20] the time is running out really fast

[1:19:27] it's just an objective fact

[1:19:30] um

[1:19:37] well I think we have time either to do

[1:19:40] two more or and keep them shorter or

[1:19:43] one more and make it longer

[1:19:47] longer

[1:19:50] I think so maybe too

[1:19:53] no no no I mean maybe also what you

[1:19:56] agreeing with you agreeing with you

[1:19:59] um

[1:20:02] I think we need to finish promptly right

[1:20:03] because of the live stream and check out

[1:20:06] and everything

[1:20:08] okay

[1:20:16] yeah

[1:20:17] yeah

[1:20:22] I'm just trying to follow orders

[1:20:26] it's my first time back here maybe they

[1:20:28] won't invite me back

[1:20:31] um okay so so I'm gonna I'm gonna skip

[1:20:33] one thing that we were gonna do but if

[1:20:35] we magically happen to have a whole

[1:20:37] bunch of time at the end we can do it

[1:20:38] but but I really didn't I don't want to

[1:20:40] crop this one because this is something

[1:20:42] very special that we we took a lot of

[1:20:44] time over yesterday because we had to

[1:20:46] change the key of it at the last minute

[1:20:49] um

[1:20:50] so hands up how many of you knew or you

[1:20:56] know were impacted by the life of Sean

[1:20:58] that's all of us really because we're

[1:20:59] here

[1:21:00] and I know he was really behind this

[1:21:03] Festival along with so many others

[1:21:06] um but as as we were as I was

[1:21:09] approaching you know the date of the

[1:21:11] festival and also doing a cross-country

[1:21:13] move and everything at my head was all

[1:21:15] over the place and I was thinking what

[1:21:17] should we sing you know when we come

[1:21:19] here obviously

[1:21:21] the Divine names obviously but I was

[1:21:23] thinking it would be nice to share

[1:21:24] something special and there was a song

[1:21:27] that shunned us and John co-wrote called

[1:21:30] to find the Beloved which I think many

[1:21:33] of you know

[1:21:34] and it was really also something that I

[1:21:37] uh a song that I love very much I've

[1:21:40] never I've never performed it before but

[1:21:42] I've sung it a lot in my car by myself

[1:21:44] just blasting it and I and I thought oh

[1:21:48] wouldn't it be so cool to sing that you

[1:21:50] know

[1:21:51] just just remembering him and and also

[1:21:54] just it's just such a beautiful song and

[1:21:57] I didn't know John was going to be here

[1:21:58] and then he emailed me and then I

[1:22:00] thought actually that's probably too

[1:22:02] complicated and let's just leave it and

[1:22:05] then John emailed me a few days before

[1:22:06] and said I'm gonna be here you know

[1:22:08] maybe we could play together

[1:22:10] but then I still thought I'm just too

[1:22:12] shy to ask him and then yesterday

[1:22:14] morning I just said do you think we

[1:22:16] could do that song so we just pulled it

[1:22:18] together so if there's any mistakes

[1:22:20] sorry but it's a very heartfelt offering

[1:22:24] and if you if you have not heard this

[1:22:26] song before it's uh

[1:22:28] as far as I understand

[1:22:30] I'm sorry if I leave out anyone who

[1:22:32] contributed to it but shamdas and John's

[1:22:35] rendition of a traditional

[1:22:40] poem

[1:22:42] attributed to Sri govind Das which could

[1:22:45] be many different authors I imagine

[1:22:47] there's many Krishna dasas and Govinda

[1:22:49] Govinda dasis and the

[1:22:52] names of poets because some of them

[1:22:54] maybe that was actually their name some

[1:22:56] of them just want to stay Anonymous in

[1:22:58] their humility

[1:23:00] um

[1:23:01] but the words of the song are the the

[1:23:04] lyrics of the song are are easy to

[1:23:07] understand because they put them in

[1:23:08] English there as well and it's just a

[1:23:11] very touching very beautiful meaning

[1:23:16] yeah

[1:23:18] um

[1:23:20] I don't think more needs to be said I

[1:23:22] feel like I'm not saying very much that

[1:23:25] does it justice so we should probably

[1:23:27] just sing it and I know many of you

[1:23:29] probably know the song so please feel

[1:23:32] free to join in doesn't have to be you

[1:23:34] don't have to just listen

[1:30:33] you don't

[1:30:34] speak these names with love then what

[1:30:37] are you doing what are you doing with

[1:30:39] this body with this

[1:30:41] um

[1:30:42] god-given ability to make sound

[1:30:46] so we come together on these special

[1:30:49] weekends these special moments where

[1:30:52] making

[1:30:53] deposit like if our life was a jar and

[1:30:57] we deposit like a honeybee we deposit a

[1:30:59] little drop of nectar into that jar we

[1:31:02] want the end of our life that jar to be

[1:31:04] full with nectar from these times coming

[1:31:07] together in Sangha to chant

[1:31:10] so for

[1:31:12] it's not really the last because of

[1:31:14] course the kirtan flows on and continues

[1:31:17] well after this moment but for this last

[1:31:21] time that we have together let's really

[1:31:24] try to bring forth all of that love that

[1:31:26] is deep within the heart and invest it

[1:31:29] in each vibration of these Divine names

[1:31:33] and we'll finish with the Maha Mantra

[2:12:05] it's just sing

[2:12:07] one more time together

[2:12:10] I know I always say one more time I'm

[2:12:12] like why do we say one more time it's

[2:12:13] like 10 more times

[2:12:15] but one last time

[2:12:19] and really my prayer for myself and I

[2:12:23] feel like this might apply to some of

[2:12:26] you in here as well is that

[2:12:29] um

[2:12:30] the inspiration and the enthusiasm that

[2:12:34] I experience here chanting together I

[2:12:37] can carry that in my heart back to all

[2:12:40] those days and times when I'm by myself

[2:12:43] and I don't I feel

[2:12:45] feel alone or not connected you know in

[2:12:48] community in this way some of us are

[2:12:51] fortunate to live in community and

[2:12:53] others have different situations but

[2:12:56] this vibration of the name continues and

[2:12:58] it's effective in either case in

[2:13:01] allowing all that is unwanted in the

[2:13:04] heart to gradually be removed

[2:13:08] and all of the best qualities that we

[2:13:10] treasure that make us

[2:13:13] illuminated from within

[2:13:16] arise

[2:13:18] so

[2:13:20] we can make a prayer it's it's easier to

[2:13:22] pray for others I think we can make a

[2:13:25] prayer for each other that we can really

[2:13:27] take take this home in our hearts

[2:13:31] more than ever before however however

[2:13:33] you have experienced in the past let's

[2:13:35] sing one more time together

[2:13:42] [Music]

[2:13:45] please

[2:17:00] prayer to each other

[2:17:02] gratitude to each other

[2:17:04] it's a traditional prayer I'll speak it

[2:17:08] but we can all

[2:17:09] just look around the room for a moment

[2:17:11] at everyone that you have shared the

[2:17:13] last three days with

[2:17:17] this event would not be the same without

[2:17:20] each person that chose to take the time

[2:17:22] out

[2:17:24] this weekend and be here

[2:17:27] so we bow to each other

[2:17:35] [Music]

[2:17:38] so much to everyone for being here and

The Maha Mantra—'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare'—is a foundational chant in Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, rooted in Sri Chaitanya's 16th-century teachings. For practitioners like Jahnavi Harrison, it functions as a 'rope you hold onto' through life, a constant thread of connection rather than a performance or stress-relief technique.
Harrison draws on Sri Chaitanya's verses that compare spiritual practitioners to trees: resilient, tolerant of all seasons, asking nothing in return. Humility isn't weakness; it's alignment with your 'natural position.' When you bow (in namaha) and offer respect without expecting return, you access genuine connection to the mantra's power.
Yes, according to Harrison's direct experience from leading daily livestream kirtan during the 2020 lockdown. She emphasizes that 'even though we might not hear you with our ears, we feel the energetic connection through the ether.' The physical distance doesn't diminish the coherence of practice when singers hold genuine intention.
In early 2020, she began offering daily live kirtan online with her brother and mother, initially to support her community. The livestream grew unexpectedly, eventually reaching thousands. This isolation period taught her that connection transcends physical proximity and shaped how she understands the practice today.
Harrison identifies unconditional love as 'the hardest thing'—giving, serving, and offering respect without calculating what you'll receive in return. This isn't abstract; it's the foundation for moving from surface-level participation to genuine connection with the mantra and the community holding it together.
The opening prayers establish that kirtan is not personal entertainment or solo spiritual practice; it's a conversation with a lineage of gurus, saints, and the sacred itself. By honoring teachers and the tradition, practitioners acknowledge they're part of something that precedes and exceeds them, grounding the practice in humility and reverence.
