Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band is a New Orleans-based group that merges ancient mantras from the yoga traditions, global chants, conscious lyrics, roots, rock, gospel and world grooves. The band is Seán Johnson, Alvin Young, Narada Wise and Chris Rosser, along with Gwendolyn Colman, who passed away in June 2025. Their music flows from what critic Alan di Perna calls "the mystical confluence of the Ganges River and the Mississippi Delta": Indian devotional bhakti chanting alongside the cultural cross-currents of New Orleans.
The band came together in September 2005 as a creative, philanthropic touring project in response to the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. They honor the roots of chant from India's yoga traditions and sacred chants from around the world, and they aim to make mantra-centered music that is relatable and open to all, to deepen connection, foster healing and move people's hearts.
Their first album, Calling The Spirits, came out independently in 2007. Nettwerk Records signed them in 2009 for Devaloka, and tracks from it were chosen for Putumayo's Yoga, World Yoga and Yoga Lounge compilations. Unity followed in August 2014 and debuted #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and #3 on Billboard's New Age Chart. Mystery, released in late 2021 on Be Still Records, explores doubt, faith and trust in what cannot be seen, and Offbeat Magazine named it one of the best albums in Louisiana music. In 2022 they released remixes with artists including DJ Drez, Ben Leinbach and Starita.
Seán is also a yoga teacher and the founder of Wild Lotus Yoga in his native New Orleans. He holds a Master's degree from The Naropa Institute-Oakland, focused on teaching chant as spiritual practice, and co-curates Putumayo's yoga music series. He has taught at Yoga Journal, Kripalu, Bhakti Fest and the German Yoga Conference. He co-authored and helped lead the effort to have chant music recognized by the GRAMMYs. Since 2023 he has directed the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina, as part of the AyurPrana leadership team. Each year he also guides Celtic Spirituality retreats in Ireland, his ancestral home, with Mary Meighan.
Worth Knowing
Seán Johnson & The Wild Lotus Band is a New Orleans group that synthesizes Indian bhakti chant—Sanskrit mantras sung in the devotional tradition—with the polycultural DNA of their hometown: gospel, blues, roots, and world grooves. The band coalesced in September 2005 as a creative response to Hurricane Katrina's devastation, channeling spiritual practice into communal healing through music. What captures listeners' attention is their refusal of New Age pastiche: they honor the legitimate lineage of yoga's chanting traditions while remaining rooted in New Orleans' earthiness, where the Mississippi Delta's blues heritage meets Ganges River devotion. The current lineup of Seán Johnson, Alvin Young, Narada Wise, and Chris Rosser—alongside the memory of longtime collaborator Gwendolyn Colman, who passed in June 2025—creates music that feels neither exoticized nor sanitized. People care because the band doesn't pretend mantra is decoration; it's central to their practice, yet they make it accessible to listeners with no yoga background whatsoever. Their 2014 album Unity debuted at #1 on the iTunes World Music Chart and #3 on Billboard's New Age Chart, and 2021's Mystery earned recognition from Offbeat Magazine as among Louisiana's finest albums that year, proof their work resonates beyond the yoga-studio demographic.
